The Origin of Purple Cabbage

Original title: L'origen de les cols violeta
Synopsis:

Maria Bertran lives in grayness, without even knowing it. She has a boyfriend she gets by with, a job that doesn’t fulfill her, and the burden of holding her family together. Her father, a clueless genius, lives with Maria’s sister Sara, an extremely sensitive girl with problems relating to others and an incapacity to get over their mother’s death. A work opportunity takes Maria away from Barcelona for a time, to Mirepoix, a small town in the south of France. Contact with the tight web of social relations there, especially with two men – Monsieur Baillard, who is in charge of recuperating a local cultivar to present it at the national agriculture fair, and Jerome, a former elite-level skier and constant presence at the local bar – will help Maria to examine her life, and in doing so to question the prejudices her first impressions leave her with.

Halfway between realist comedy and the novel of self-discovery, The Origin of Purple Cabbage is an original debut, full of humor and sensitivity, dedicated to characters in the midst of rebuilding themselves, who refuse to give up their dreams.
